Compliance & Standards

This page is a general, plain-English overview of the OSHA and NFPA standards most relevant to industrial dust and fume collection. OSHA General Industry Standards

OSHA regulates workplace air quality primarily under 29 CFR 1910, including permissible exposure limits (PELs) for airborne contaminants such as welding fume, hexavalent chromium, and wood dust, and general ventilation requirements under the general duty clause where a contaminant-specific standard doesn't exist. Properly sized source-capture equipment — like a downdraft table or dust collector matched to the process it serves — is typically the primary engineering control used to keep exposure below applicable PELs.

NFPA Combustible Dust Standards

Several NFPA codes apply to facilities that generate combustible dust: NFPA 652 sets the overall fundamentals and generally requires a Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA); NFPA 61, 484, and 654 cover combustible dust in agricultural, metal, and general industry facilities respectively; NFPA 68 covers explosion venting (relieving pressure safely if an explosion occurs); and NFPA 69 covers explosion prevention systems such as isolation, suppression, and spark detection and extinguishing. A facility generating combustible dust typically needs a layered approach — source capture, ducting, and one or more of these protection strategies — rather than a single piece of equipment.

Electrical & Wiring Standards

Where combustible dust is present, electrical equipment and wiring in the affected area may need to meet NFPA 70 (the National Electrical Code) requirements for hazardous (classified) locations. This is a facility-specific determination that depends on the dust type and how the area is classified, and should be reviewed with a qualified electrician or engineer alongside your dust collection equipment planning.
